The Guideboat

STORY

A century-old maritime classic reborn.

Adirondack Guideboats debuted during the 19th century. They remain some of the fastest fixed seat rowboats ever built. The hull of this Guideboat is an exact reproduction of the company founder’s rare 1892 J. H. Rushton Saranac Lake Guideboat. While guideboats share lines with canoes, they’re not. They are rowed and not paddled, capable of carrying great weight, heavenly on glassy smooth early morning rows while also noted for winning innumerable open ocean races. Guideboats feature two rowing positions, are capable of car topping and are spacious enough for up to three adults.

Each California-made hull maintains the lines of the company’s 19th century original. Hulls are of hand laid biaxial composite for heightened strength and grace, generously trimmed in hand joined, oil-rubbed solid American cherry and finished in Guideboat’s signature midnight blue, hand-waxed to perfection.

History

Prior to summering in the Hamptons or Tahoe became chic, the late 1800’s witnessed Adirondack Guideboats ferrying the likes of Morgan, Rockefeller and Post to their campsites, lakeside retreats, and deep-wood sanctuaries, each grander than the next. Roadless, but graced with endless, pristine lakes, the way in was by Guideboat. These beautifully proportioned craft were for sportsmen and their guides as well as hauling materials to build the camps. Guideboat builders proliferated with many small workshops meeting the increasing needs of sportsmen and their guides.
