The Rundown: 10.15.17
Now that our fall catalog, 72 Hours in Maine, is out in the wild and we've all but draped Huckberry HQ in old buoys and lobster traps, it's high time to meet some of the boys that made our trip out a rollicking adventure. In this Rundown we get the lowdown on the best local eats, local beers, and local customs from our catalog star Nick LaVecchia, real-life lobsterman Eric Pray, and Huckberry's own resident Mainer, Ben O'Meara. Ayuh!
Home Hack: Go smaller, and go solar. Purge unneeded stuff. Free yourself up for more wandering!
Life Hack: I’m constantly on the hunt for the perfect bags for all occasions I find myself in. Right now, this new Peak Design pack is it. Every square inch has been thought out so well.
Favorite Huckberry Brand: Flint and Tinder. Great fit, comfort, and quality. Made in the USA too.
Favorite Maine Dish: I eat my fair share of Maine blueberries — especially when my wife Molly makes her famous Cast Iron Blueberry Crisp.
Your Biggest Visual Inspiration: Artist Mark Rothko.
Camera Recommendations For A Newbie: Pick up a good, cheap 35mm film body and shoot dozens of rolls of film. Learn how different exposures change the way light is affecting the film plane. Shoot with that for a while, refine your style, and then add other camera bodies and lens options. I'm a big fan of the digital Fuji x100F paired with a fixed 35mm lens.
Travel Hack: The Goal Zero small solar panel and USB charger. Don't leave home without it — especially if you’re carrying for phones and cameras.
Favorite Place To Shoot In Maine: Drifting in the currents of the Atlantic, off the rocky coast of my hometown.
Biggest Misconception People Have About Maine: Wait, what? You shoot surfing there? In the winter?
Favorite Huckberry Purchase: Glerups shoes. I live in them in the winter, indoor and out, morning coffee runs and all.
Top Photo Bucket List Location: Greenland in February.
Piece Of Gear That’s Saved Your Life: Bellroy AC Wallet! I lost it last Halloween night while taking Leo trick-or-treating. It was pouring rain all night. We went back the next morning and walked the neighborhood, and there it was, on the side of the road. Money, license, credit cards all bone dry thanks to that waterproof zipper.
Favorite Maine Beer: Allagash Curieux. It's a Belgium Trippel aged in bourbon barrels.
What You’re Currently Reading: Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed The Art of War.
Most Recent HB Purchase: Our Wolf Boot with Rancourt. It's a style that really does go with anything. The Vibram mini-lug sole is also a personal favorite — it adds a bit of ruggedness for fall/winter. I'm wearing the hell out of these lately. And they're handmade in Maine — doesn't get much better!
If You Only Got Three Meals in Portland, ME: So many great options, but here's my most recent line-up: coffee and a breakfast sandwich at Tandem Coffee, oysters and the brown butter lobster Roll (insanely good) at Eventide Oyster, quick pre-dinner beer at J's, and then whatever the freshest seafood on the menu is at Street and Co. End it with a nightcap next door at Central Provisions' downstairs bar.
What I'm Listening To: J. Roddy Walston & The Business' new album, Destroyers of the Soft Life. "Burn Black" and "Heart is Free" are a couple favorites to start with. They're one of best live bands out there so if they come through your town it's definitely worth the price of admission.
Latest TV Binge: I may be late to the game here, but Fargo Season 2. Here's the tip that got me in the game: no need to watch season 1 if you want to dive right in. One of best seasons of any show I've watched in a while.
Top Travel Hack: Get some sort of pouch/organizer for all your cords, chargers, miscellaneous. I use the Magpul Weatherproof Pouch for all my travel EDC. Has kept my backpack so much more manageable on the go.
Next Huckberry Purchase: Definitely the Campo Shirt by Portuguese Flannel (so soft) for myself and a couple more of the Flint and Tinder Heavyweight Henleys - perfect layers for colder temps coming up. And then a Blunt Umbrella for my brother living in London. Gotta spread the love!
Favorite Maine Beer: Baxter Brewery. Their Stowaway IPA has been a mainstay in my refrigerator for the past 2 years!
Best Way To Prepare A Lobster Roll: House-made aioli and scallions, lemon juice, salt and pepper on a toasted buttered roll.
Favorite Huckberry Purchase: My Flint and Tinder 10-year Hoodie, hands down.
Next Huckberry Purchase: Pair of Give’r 4 Season Gloves for the upcoming Maine winter.
Favorite Place To Wake Up/Fall Asleep: The Belgrade Lakes Region in central Maine. It’s totally secluded from traffic and the everyday hustle.
How You Wind Down After A Long Day On The Water: A few cold beers, a cold shower, and then I just relax with my two kids and my wife. If I take a warm shower when I get off the boat, I instantly want to take a nap.
Top Travel Bucket List Pick: Finland. My wife has a bunch of Finnish relatives. Also, Alaska — to do some hunting and fishing up there.
How Much Longer Will You Keep Lobstering: My wife always asks me, "How much longer are you going to keep doing this?" Right now there's a 15-year waiting list for a lobster license. So it's kind of like a dying industry even though so many people want to get into it. It's so hard unless you have a boat that's paid off — or deep pockets. It makes it hard to walk away. I can't see myself working in an office. You work for yourself, you're working on the water, you get to make your own schedule. It's just an addiction.
