The Danxia Mountains of China

Nope, no Photoshop here. These mountains really look like this. Striped with a variety of vivid colors, the Danxia Mountains in China’s Gansu province are a surreal sight to behold, and on August 2010, were annointed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Years of movement below the Earth’s crust combined with weathering on the Earth’s surface have created the Danxia’s unique topographical landscape and its trademark coloration. Though the region is typically arid, the mountains are best viewed after rainfall when the rocks’ colors are especially striking.
