7 Best Men's Hybrid Shorts for Summer
With the rising temps, we’ve been side-eying last year’s cutoffs and realizing our shorts game could use an upgrade. So, we scoured the menswear universe and noticed a trend for 2018: versatility. This summer’s best shorts were designed to do more. Whether they’re being worn in the water and then to lunch or from the gym to the trail, they’ve risen to meet the demands of the modern man.
We plotted seven of our favorites on Huckberry’s highly scientific hybrid shorts matrix, evaluating each by their qualities of style, athletic performance, adventure, and aquatic prowess, letting you easily locate your ideal pair.
United by Blue: Berkshire Short
Split evenly between the ideal adventure companion and a Sunday morning brunch, the Berkshire Short’s cotton/poly blend, camouflaged under a polo or button-down, has a subtle sheen that hints at its performance. Get them out on the trail, and that same durable material repels abrasions and offers a slight stretch in a slim cut. We especially liked the zippered pockets, which kept our everyday carry essentials from spillage.
Myles Apparel: Momentum Short 2.0
For gym-lovers who demand the performance of an athletic short and love the athleisure style, the hybrid Momentum Short 2.0 will make you feel right at home. With their nylon/spandex fabric, mid-thigh inseam, and water-repellent finish, they were a breeze in our HIIT class. But it was après-workout where we most loved them. Paired with a slip-on shoe and no socks, we were digging their Mediterranean vibe—and killer price.
Patagonia: Baggies 7”
Like its ambassadors and athletes, Patagonia’s Baggies thrive in the outdoors, wet or dry. These DWR-treated nylon shorts with mesh liner excel in the water but dry fast, while their more generous fit allow you to twist and contort in the crag or laze atop a ridgeline. An elastic waistband and drawstring is simple and comfy. This heritage design has been around for so long that, as the saying goes, “If it's been done, it's been done in Baggies.”
Free Fly: Bamboo-Lined Hybrid Shorts
A true waterman’s delight, the Bamboo-Lined Hybrid Shorts have a boardshort look and feel with a buttery soft natural fiber blend inside. Antibacterial, UV-protective, and odor-resistant, they’re an easy choice for a weekend on the lake under the hot summer sun. Belt loops let us dress them up, while the blue color—a Huckberry exclusive—was just flashy enough to separate us from our nautically-minded peers.
Proof: Nomad Short
Proof that all who wander don’t have to be sloppy. The hybrid Nomad looks like a chino and wears like a chino, but the four-way stretch and water- and stain-resistant fabric turns away mustard and motor oil alike while wicking sweat in the hottest summer temps. The thicker, mid-weight fabric paid off in on-the-road durability, while a secret zippered stash pocket meant we browsed busy markets without a care while our valuables remained safe and secure.
Faherty: All Day Short
If there’s a jack of all trades on this list, it’s the All Day Short. Workouts? Its cotton/poly blend stretches and wicks. Swimwear? A durable water-repellent finish and draining pockets let them dry lightning fast. An evening out? The slim silhouette and absence of garish logos is always appropriate. A sunset hike? An odor-repellent treatment keeps them fresh as a daisy. You can get more specialized with other offerings, but these are hands down our favorites for a little bit of everything.
Roark: Layover Stretch Travel Shorts 19”
As its name might suggest, the Layover Stretch Travel Shorts are designed for a life on the move during the hottest summer months. Despite their trim cut, they have gobs of pockets, only some of which are visible. Two secret compartments—one in the front and one in the back—are designed to accommodate a passport and a cell phone. Oh, and did we mention breathability? A vented rear mesh yoke allows both a breeze and modesty to our 6 o’clock, which we appreciated most on packed city busses and equatorial locales.
